The Application Process

How do I apply for a job at BYU?

Complete and save an application online at, and then select and apply to individual job postings. If you need help in this process, please call Staff and Administrative Employment (801) 422-3563. You may also use the computers in our office at D-70 ASB (Abraham O Smoot Building) Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to closing time at 5:00 p.m. Our office is closed Tuesdays from 10:45 a.m. to noon for University Devotionals and Forums.

How will I be notified of my application status throughout the hiring process?

You will be notified of your application status via the email address and/or phone number you provide on your application. We highly encourage you to include and maintain a current email address on your application, as it is the main means of communication to you throughout the process.

May I work for a relative or family member?

No. Colleges /departments may not employ a person or contract for services with an individual in a position within the administrative scope or control of a near relative, including full-time and part-time personnel, special employees, faculty, administrative, staff, categories I, II, and III, or students.

Persons Considered Relatives or Near Relatives Include:
Parent Spouse Uncle, Aunt
Child Son-in-law Nephew, Niece
Brother, Sister Daughter-in-law Cousin
Father-in-law Brother-in-law Grandparent
Mother-in-law Sister-in-law Grandchild

(Step and half relationships, i.e., step-brother, step-father, half brother, half sister, etc., are also considered near relatives for purposes of this policy).

For cover letters and letters of recommendation, to whom are they to be addressed?

Address your cover letters and letters of recommendation to "Selection Committee" or "Hiring Manager," instead of a specific individual. As a policy, BYU does not release the individual names of hiring personnel.

Are cover letters, resumes, and letters of recommendation necessary?

Cover letters, resumes, and letters of recommendation may be requested and be optional or required, OR they may not be requested and cannot be attached. The hiring department will indicate this on the YJobs posting. If requested and you do not have the letters of recommendation, you may ask the individuals writing the recommendations to email them to our front desk at with your name and the job posting number and title.

Do I fill out the Education and Employment History sections on the application if I submit a resume?

Yes. A completed application is necessary to verify past education and employment. Information is requested on the application that is not generally provided on a resume. We encourage you to be detailed and build your application by clicking on the "Add Entry" links. Your application will be used to determine whether you meet job requirements and may affect your starting compensation.

If I am a current BYU employee, do I need to submit an application?

You can check your job status at after you have applied for a position. The review process takes approximately two weeks.
